How do Davies and Levitin define music? How does Davies, on this basis, respond to the challenge of the Cage piece 4'33"? What do you think Levitin might say about it?
Davies in my views wouldn't consider 4'33" a piece of music, while a piece of art displayed differently to a picture or a play. While he feels there needs to be a sequence of notes strung together from at least some type of instrument to consider it music. Levitin I believe would agree to some degree with Davies, that this is artwork however, shouldn't be considered a song.
