In my interpretation Plato states that there are three key things that creates a piece of musical work. Music, rhythm and speech yet if one of these are disarranged then all is lost for that piece. An example of this would be, "good rhythm goes along with fine speaking and is similar to it, while bad rhythm goes along with the opposite sort, and the same goes for harmony and disharmony.."(83)
The assumption I gathered out of it is was that music is the voice of the soul showing the true emotion of themselves and to connect to their inner most being. With all of these functions combined together shows if their (the person playing) character is good or bad.
