RESPONSE! 9/7/11!!!

Levitin would consider John Cage's piece, 4' 33", to not be music. Levitin seems to think of music as very uniform. A written, interpretable piece with the technical aspects of notation that have been developed over hundreds of years. He seems to favour the literal definition of music, as apposed to Davies who seems to agree with Cage. It is the interpretation of the composer, as well as the listener, to judge whether it is music or not. To me, 4' 33" is meant to test the boundaries of music and art. Cage believes that it is the basic sound of everyday life which creates music.
