9-14-11 Response
Personally, much of this was confusing to me, but the part about being in the cave and not seeing the light makes a lot of sense to me. Mostly because once you've been kept away from something from so long and then come out into the light or become enlightened things could be overwhelming, but once you adapt to the environment as humans are capable of doing you will be fine. So, I think that Plato is confident that these people will take it all in and rejoice in the music now that they are old enough to appreciate it. Filtering out things when they were younger in order to build this society in order to have them take things in bit by bit, so that when the guardians or the society is fully exposed it won't be a complete shell-shock to them.

I also liked the part about the children being hidden away in the cave and then being allowed to see the light-what was actually happening in the world. Maybe parents teaching their children only what is good is comparable to keeping them in a cave. Then, when they are old enough, they are let out of the cave to see what the world is really like. They are allowed to go out into the real world, apply the morals they learned in the cave, and adapt to their environment.
