Socrates wanted the guardians only to listen to simple music that would move them to virtuous behavior. The guardians should not listen to harmonies that were expressive of sorrow, or any other bad feelings. He believed that the guardians should listen only to music that was expressive of the strain of courage and the strain of temperance. Socrates rejected any complicated rhythms because he believed that harmony, grace, and good rhythm depended on simplicity. He also believed that the guardians should not listen to any types of flutes, but only the harp or the lyre.
Socrates is assuming that whatever kind of feeling or emotion the music seems to evoke, that that is what the person who listens to it will become.
