Davies seems to believe that ambient noise isn't considered music. He finds ambient noise to be more of a theatrical performance than anything else. He seems to believe that music is created by instruments through actually playing them.
Levitin seems to believe that a lot of things is considered to be music. I don't believe the mentioned ambient noise being one of them though.
Davies doesn't believe that Cage's piece of 4' 33" is not music at all. He believes it was just a type of theatrical performance. He seemed reluctant to even admit that it might even be considered a type of preforming art.
I believe that Levitin is saying that music can be found in all sorts of places, it's just all on how we, as individuals, interpret it.
