I have never thought that the lyrics of a song were less important than the music of the song, but in this chapter Schopenhauer convinces me that it is so. The lyrics simply state the reason for the emotions that the music is displaying, like the singers of an opera do for the musical piece. Schopenhauer states that music "expresses every movement of the will" while the lyrics give "the motives that give rise to that feeling." Music also keeps the song "beautiful and purity" when the lyrics could portray something absurd and ugly.
