I really enjoyed the presentations on the final day of class and presentations.
A few things that I wanted to say about them--

Melissa, I enjoyed how you talked about the voice and how songs are really pieces of poetry. I definitely agree with that, as I am also a poet.. and that's what I got into this school to do.
Martha, I really liked how you admitted that your songs really don't vary, which is true with a lot of what I listen to also, so I was able to connect with your ideas as well.
Kelsey, I really, really enjoyed when you discussed how you like the fact that you enjoy artists that write their own songs.. and also when you discussed Nietzsche and "must that makes you productive."

All in all, very great day to finish presentations and the class work.

I really enjoyed the last two presentations today. Kelsey, I liked how you said you're family has a tradition of listening to this one CD while you put up your Christmas decorations. I also like how you said that you might even carry on the tradition with your own kids someday. Melissa I really enjoyed your musical selections. I also liked how you prefer the non-recorded versions of the song more than the actual recorded ones.

I thought that everyone else presenting did very well. Allison, I liked listening to your presentation because I liked hearing about how much your music varied. I also liked how you compared the two versions of the same song, because I liked listening to how they were the same and how they were different, and hearing about why you liked the second one better. Rachael, I really liked those songs you played by McFly, I think that I'll look them up sometime. And I think I understand what you were saying about emotions, and how the emotions are based on the music but that the lyrics help, too.

I enjoyed all the presentations on Monday, it is very interesting to see the different styles of music that everyone else has. Not one person has played the same music twice, so i can't wait to hear the rest

The presentations went well, once again.

It was interesting to hear people's life stories that somehow ultimately effected their musical taste. Once I heard people tell about themselves, I had a hard time relating it to the music that they played. I thought to myself "I really do not see how they got anything out of this song," but I remembered that there is more than words can explain that makes a person like a certain music. Though my life story might be very similar to theirs, they are different enough to be able to eventually make a drastic difference in musical taste.

I think everyone did a wonderful job, Joe, in particular your presentation was so personal and it took so much courage to speak about those issues. It's so interesting to see how your experiences with family shaped your musical taste, I really enjoyed it especially since I was always a Ringo instead of a Paul fan. And Jon, yours was a bit different than everyone else, everyone who went so far said that music had always been a part of their lives, but you said you didn't start paying attention to it until later on. I found that really interesting because you seem as if you're really passionate about it now and are really trying to 'catch up' on what you missed.

I enjoyed everyone's presentation. However, I really feel the need to comment on Rachel's presentation. When she first played McFly, I got really into it. The second song by this band that she played, caused me to completely lose my train of thought. I am really glad that she introduced this bad to the class. I have not been able to find a band that made me lose my complete train of thought in years, if ever.

Response to presentations, Day 2

Cory: I like how you focused on quality of sound and how it can effect the way we listen to music. I never thought of that and it was really interesting how you related that to our own musical experiences.

Emily: It's funny, I liked that song, but never gave it really a second thought, but the way you described it made me look further into it than I did when I listened to it without your presentation. I think you really contradict Schopenhauer in a good way speaking about how it is okay to relate to lyrics as they do help some songs and the voice as well when portraying emotion.

Hunter: Your presentation was so good. I like how you connected your musical choice to that of your parents and how you said that you began listening to it because your parents didn't want you to listen to the music you listen to. I thought it was interesting, because I never personally considered Metallica metal in the first place.

Kristen: When you played your country songs I wasn't sure what to expect, but I love how you related it to memories. I thought it was nice how you said that the music grows on you, kind of like it has a personality of its own.

Day 2

Emily - I was interested in the fact that you chose one song to represent your feelings on music as a whole. That's something I would have had a great deal of trouble deciding, and it shows that you know how you feel. That's great.

Hunter - I thought it was really awesome seeing how connected and how personal music is to you. It seems like that deep and that type of connection isn't always seen, and kudos to you for being able to express it and articulate it.

Response to presentations, Day 2

Again, I really enjoyed everyone's presentations. It's interesting to learn about how music affects different people in so many ways.

Emily- I really liked the song you chose to base your presentation off of. It's always nice to have the one song or artist you can turn to when you really need them.

Hunter- I really liked how you talked about the music. I can tell that you're really passionate about everything you listen to. I also like how you made side comments about things and really explained why your music influences you so much.

Emily- I liked how your presentation of your musical taste was based on just one song. I thought it was pretty cool how you could manage to do that, and I thought that you did very well, and that the presentation was very organized.

Hunter- I loved the way you talked about music. It seems like it is really important to you. In your presentation you went pretty deep into what your music means to you, how it is therapeutic for you, and how it has shaped your life. I believe that your honesty kept us all very interested in what you had to say.

11/30 Presentations

I enjoyed all the presentations.

Kristen, Dan both of your musical taste is extremely different than mine. I found it extraordinary Kristen that you love soundtracks having never met a I guess "true" soundtrack lover it was fascinating to hear all these soundtracks that for the most part I've never heard of. Which I guess shows how limited I am when it comes to musical appreciation/listening.

Dan all I can hear is the Jep Theme song. I like that your presentation wasn't just about emotion but also at least with the tie in from the Jep final question song brought your listening to a cognitive level as well. "It helps me study," I personally am going to try using this song myself for the same purpose, because after you talked about what the song does for you in that light I can definitely fathom it helping myself as well.

Hunter all I have to say is props to you. For the first time ever I enjoyed Metallica. The way you talked about them and what Metallica does for you, it finally got me to understand why there is so many people who see Metallica as a good band. It was neat that the first song you played is on the Black Album (the first album I got of Metallica's to see if I enjoyed them) and how I saw them from a different light. Maybe because I have aged and can comprehend deeper meaning like you yourself had at a young age.

I really enjoyed everyone's presentations. They were interesting and I enjoyed most of the musical selections, even though I only really knew the country songs that were played and the Jeopardy theme song.

I liked all of the presentations again.
The one that stuck out to me the most this time around was dan's because he played a song that he used to play in pep band which also brought back my own memories because i played that exact song when i was in pep band. it was nice to hear it again

I was interested in Dan's song choices. He played a non original version of one his songs, it being a version played by a pep band or marching band. But this is interesting because I wonder if that version means more to him because he once played in a pep band. Bringing a similar aspect to my argument that there are many different versions of songs even if it is the same recording or notes. Other aspect come into play such as history with the song (where it was listened to, where or how was it performed, good memories of playing in pep band maybe...)

I was impressed by all of the presentations.

I particularly found Jordan's view on lyrics interesting. I personally do not find much emphasis on lyrics, but I realized that some people do listen to music for the words and stories told, and it helped me realize that music like that is made. Then I questioned my own approach to lyrics and wondered if the bands I listen to (which I find do not have a lyrical focus [though I still may love the lyrics]) make the music with a focus on lyrics, only I perceive it not to have. It's interesting.

I also completely agree with Nathan's trouble with being able to describe his musical taste. Emotions, memories, scenery, moods, and interaction (or lack of) play a huge part of it, and that is hard to describe.

Feedback: 12/1/11

Corey's defense of indie and his taste for music that brings him into an artist's environment was well-supported and well-done! He showed a lot of connection in a musicianship sense and how it plays into his personal taste.

Emily's presentation was a great example of emotional connection through life experiences and depicted her taste well.

Kristen had an interesting presentation that involved film scores as well as her country roots. I also found a parallel conceptually between her description of music and addictive substances. She talked of needing to find her self and breaking away from her friend's influence because their music wasn't the music she truly enjoyed. This was a cool way of showing how music plays a role in one's character.

Hunter packed his presentation with lots of personal connections explaining his strong bond to music, but kept the mood light with a good touch of improvised comedy. His emotions for music are nearly unbelievable; it's his strength, life, and entire world. He tied in Plato's protection of the Guardians from music capable of corruption with his own protection from music, which demonstrated course knowledge as well as segueing into his path to finding Metallica.

Dan's presentation focused on experiences in life and allowing music to be a stimulant to relieve stress and revisit cherished moments. He touched on something we hadn't discussed either, which is music that is designed to be played for occasions, such as pep-songs and renditions of supportive crowd-chants (example: Da da da dun, da daa! Charge!). These specific songs share the same associations for nearly everyone since they here them while experiencing and focusing on the same emotional, visual, and auditory stimuli. Very cool!

12/1 presentations

Once again, everyone did a great job on their presentations. I liked how Hunter included some humor in his presentation. You could see his emotion for his music when he played it during the presentation. It shows that he really cares about music.

Corey- I liked how you picked a band to define your taste in music-- really thought out and really cool. I also liked how you talked about chord arrangements and how they are melodic-based, basically finding a "new way to think of a typical rock sound."

Emily- I liked the story format of your presentation, showed a lot of emotion through it, which was wonderful.

Kristen- Varied, soundtracks to movies, which was really cool. I liked how you discussed the idea of music you enjoy needs to be "strong, but not harsh." You also brought up a good point with the beat and how you like the good ones-- and how the music needs to tell a story (or rather, you like when it does tell one).

Dan- Distinct beats, older music-- Calming, self alternate reality. I liked your various musical pieces and ideas-- I liked how the music moved you emotionally and put you into memories, which to me, showed how much music affects not only your life, but everyone else.
