Plato makes it clear that there are three ingredients in a song. Those three ingredients are words, music, and rhythm. He seems to believe that guardians-in-training should be exposed to music at an early age so that they will appreciate it.
The way I took it, he believes humans are greatly influenced by music. Everyone is influenced it in different ways. Some of these ways are good and healthy, while others could have be done without.
