What are the criteria by which Plato selects or rejects music for the guardians-in-training of his Republic to be exposed to? What assumptions is he making about the way humans are influenced by music?
By no means necessary would Plato want to expose the guardians in training to music that correlated with any kind of vindictive, self-seeking, or any negative behavior. Plato believed if the guardians in training were influenced with positive music, stories and types of poetry that be hold would influence their actions and make them better guardians. Plato indicated that one had to have a balance of immense physical strength as well as musical education. He seemed to believe that if either Music, rhythm and speech got disarranged then all is lost for that piece of music, because those were the three main things in which made up music. Plato believed that guardians-in-training should be exposed to music at an early age so that they will appreciate it. That good conquering evil and positive messages should be read to child at an early age.
I feel as though Plato is assuming that if people do perhaps listen to music that is “negative” that the person who listened may be more apt to behave in a negative manner. This of course is not always necessarily true because a person will act on there own due to the fact that is who that person is not because of the musical influence.
