I would have to agree with you on the interpretation of Davies and Levitin. The simple matter is the audience doesn't know that the performance isn't anything more than an art piece.. and shouldn't be considered music. It seems more like something that should be put into a museum of some sort.. rather than expected to be a musical piece. I wouldn't have understood what Cage was trying to do, unless we discussed it in class like we had. But I still find myself trying to distinguish the silences.. and the actual "music." Where is the music in Cages' piece? All I get is that we should learn and listen to our surroundings more carefully.. and be aware of it. I don't know if I'm the only one or not...
