I enjoy listening to Schopenhauer talk about music. He understands that music is different than other forms of art. A song or a piece can posess an idea, like any other form of art, however music is something to be interpreted by both the listener and the musician. An Elliott Smith song can be sad and painful to one person, but bring joy or enlightenment to another.
A similar point that he makes is the importants of the parts of the music. The lyrics, a form of poetry, are less important than the music itself. I feel this is a very big point; I am constently listening to music, but rarely do I remember the lyrics as much as the melody or the tone.
