It seemed as if Plato chose music for the "guardians" that was more courageous, honorable, or epic, because Plato knows that music has the ability to evoke emotion and possibly even shape a personality, so he chose the music he thought would shape what he perceived to be the perfect guardian. He did not want the guardians to listen to sad, angry, or remorseful because he thought that, like the humans, the guardians' emotions would be manipulated by whatever music they happened to be listening to.
