Response for 9/14/11

In our first reading of Plato, the guardians are limited in their musical choices to mold them in a specific way. By providing them with certain musical types, the guardians would develop pride and a sense of honor in their duty. Similarly, by denying them more controversial music, they kept them from developing a god complex against the citizens.

In the later readings, as the guardians have grown in their profession, they become less influenced by what is given to them, therefore there is less of a need to select the music which they are allowed to listen to.
