I believe that Levitin would agree with Davies to an extent that music is organized sound because he gets into the technical aspect of what music is and how it is formed, but he also believes that it lives within the deepest part of human beings where emotions lie. Which is why I say that Levitin would say that if Cage's piece evokes some sort of emotion or thought within the person then it is music.

Response to Post 09-07-11
Davies defines music as organized sound however he believes that as long as one is open to expression then it can be music, though he does not believe this he accepts other people's interpretations of it. While he is critical in his interpretation of 4'33" he sees it as a piece that is abstract and the reason why some people are so critical of it is because they cannot define it clearly. He responds to the the piece by coming at it from all directions, but in the end sees it as a performance piece instead of music though it is meant for instruments because they are not used, he does not believe it is a musical performance.

I would have to agree with you about how Davies accepts people opinions of what to call music and what not to..he understands the concept. I also agree to what you say about how people can not define the piece 4'33" because no one really knows what to call because no one really has seen that as a piece of music before.
