Nietzsche's sudden distaste for Wagner's work came about through both Nietzsche's observations of his operas, as well as through his observations of Wagner personally. Nietzsche believed that Wagner's work in music was focused on a dying theme, and that Wagner was too headstrong to see that. He believed that Wagner's music, as well as ideals within his music, were straying too far from his original intentions. On top of this, Nietzsche held distaste for Wagner's drifting towards German Nationalism and antisemitism. As the years past, the two drifted in to completely different view points on the world as well as on music.

I agree that Nietzsche and Wagner drifted apart in their points of view about the world and music. Nietzsche also seemed to hold a personal grudge against Wagner after their friendship ended. I think Nietzsche did not separate his personal dislike for Wagner and his criticism for his music.
