Schopenhauer describes happiness as something that can only come from suffering. We must suffer first to be able to experience joy or pleasure, after which we immediately start to suffer again. He seems to glorify the life of the ascetic, of a person who is able to rise above the the suffering that the human race experiences.
Schopenhauer seems to imply that art and music are reminders that happiness is only fleeting, and that whatever is pleasant can only exist forever in a piece of music or art, because that moment in time seems to be frozen. His description of this idea reminded me very much of "Nothing Gold Can Stay" by Robert Frost.
