Nietzsche turns against Wagner because their ideas went on vastly different directions. At first they were drawn to each other because they both wanted to same things. Both composer and philosopher wanted a change from the music at the time. Nietzsche thought Wagner was revolutionary, he was amazed by how forward he was and how he took control of the music and made it into what he wanted it to be. Especially in creating his own type of structure. Something artists of the time were not open to doing.

However, late Nietzsche soon grew tired of Wagner's arrogant ways and saw that instead of wanting to revolutionize music he now strived to win the praise of the Germans. Instead of worrying about giving the music substance he focused on playing up the drama. Nietzsche, abhorred this and decided to break away from Wagner completely.
