Schopenhauer ultimately claims fulfillment of life is the overcoming of will, the release of self from the tragic comedy of the flux of human emotions, living saintly. However, he also claims "No will: no representation, no world." Music and Art don't seem to have a place in a perfect existence (nothing), for they are pure representations of will. While they are the depiction of human existence, the aim of said existence is to lose it, therefore the mediums are counter productive to this western "enlightenment".
(Also, the ties between his nothingness and I believe Zen are rather tight, seems to be highly influenced by eastern thought)
