Response 03-October-2011

Schopenhauer's view that ones happiness is actually just negative is very interesting and something that I partially agree with. Since what someone considers happiness is different than that of another, the method by which they go after said happiness is different; thus, it cannot be defined as one thing. Instead happiness comes from the pains and toils of the individual.
Ex. A person believes that they will gain happiness by making a greater amount of money; however, in order to acquire said money they must work more and spend less time with leisurely activities.  As a result this, then, acquired happiness was born from negative "things".

Continuing, though, it seems as though Schopenhauer's beliefs regarding music is somewhat of a way to move around this problem. Since music is more perfect a visual of their forms, in that it is as close as it gets when compared to other arts, it will allow one to experience happiness without the negative consequences.
Therefore, by introducing music into ones life, they are better capable of achieving said happiness.
