What is the proper relation, according to Hanslick, between music and emotion?
Hanslick believes in his own biasness; he believes that the proper relation between music and emotion is that music can bring fourth different emotions from different people. Music itself doesn’t contain an emotion. The emotion interrupted from each individual may be different even if the music is the same for everyone. Hanslick believes that music is a tonally moving form. For example Hanslick indicates that
" We follow sweeping lines, here dipping gently, there boldly soaring, approaching and separating, corresponding curves large and small, seeming incommensurable yet always well connected together, to every part a counterpart, a collection of small details but yet a whole." (29)
Hanslick also indicates that ideas can be represented by the means of music but not occur as feeling. However feelings do not portray to representing music.
