In The Case of Wagner, Nietzsche has gone against Wagner because he sees the bad side to him. Before, I think he was just amazed by his work and star struck. It's almost as if he didn't want to see that Wagner was, in a way, a big jerk. After he analyzed Wagner's pieces, he claimed that they sickened the body and didn't bring anything but bad health. He continues to call it brilliant, but also too elaborate. His music shook the listeners and gave them shudders.
Nietzsche respected Wagner to the end, but he didn't want to be associated with him anymore.
I think Nietzsche wanted music that moved people, but not in the way Wagner went about it. Music should move the you with just the music, not with the dramatics.
