When Langer claims that music is an illusion, she is talking about the influence music has on the mind and emotions. When a person is listening to music, they are experiencing both real time and virtual time. Real time is self-explanatory. Virtual time consists of the emotions or memories that the music evokes while it is being listened to. When we listen to music, all our ideas and perceptions are transposed into the tones we hear and thus create our own personal illusion of what we think of the music.
