Langer claims that music is an illusion because it creates an illusion of time and motion, known as virtual time. It is also an illusion because we can fill this time with our own memories and ideas, to make the music somehow significant to us. Something about music can bring these things out from our memory to create what the music is for us, and so the way that our minds create what music is I think is how it is like an illusion.
