What Langer seems to be describing is how the brain functions in response to perception. It works through a web of associations and connections it has previously made and connects what you currently perceive and feel to your memory. For music, our non-unique associations that are shared between all listeners are limited to analysis, timbre, and other recurring elements found in a majority of musical works. Otherwise, music is unique to each listener based on their own personal associations and experiences.
Her concept of the illusion is not defined as something that is unreal. To her, it is a state of voluntary trance in which one possesses heightened perception with a specific focus. Music, by this definition, is certainly illusory.
