From his writings, it is apparent Levitin believes in Darwin's theory of evolution. Levitin points out that "Everyone alive today is composed of genes that won a long-lasting, large-scale genetic competition" (250). Thus, the human traits and characteristics that we have today are the ones that have survived and evolved over the years.

Levitin thinks music has evolved because he believes, like Darwin, that music plays a key role in selecting a mate. Levitin provides the following quote from Darwin. "I conclude that musical notes and rhythm were first acquired by the male or female progenitors of mankind for the sake of charming the opposite sex. Thus, musical tones became firmly associated with some of the strongest passions an animal is capable of feeling, and are consequently used instinctively" (251). Levitin also points out that music has been around since the caveman – old instruments have been discovered such as flute-like objects. He thinks that over the years, music and dancing may be used to show creativity and intelligence as well as physical fitness to possible mates. Music thus plays a key role in the continuation of the human race.

I think Levitin's view has given me something to think about. As Levitin points out, famous rock stars have always been know to attract groupies – no matter what they look like. This reminds me of the words from the Dire Strait and Sting tune about the reasons for wanting to be a rock star: "Money for nothing, chicks for free."

I personally like music because it can help me escape the pressures and stresses of everyday life. Maybe this is another reason why music continues to evolve in humans- music is a way for humans to temporary escape and cope with life's hardships.
