Levitin believes that music evolved into more complex forms as time went on. Music went on to take on the aspects of society as it too evolved. The music adapted to what the people wanted to hear. For example during the 60's the music reflected the need for freedom of the time and continued on into present day music where themes that are explored would never have been talked about so obviously in past music types.
I completely agree with his view and I can see where he is coming from. However, many artists are now trying to duplicate past artistry and are using samples of past musicians. So, I believe that there is also a constant looking back at past musicians are the way music is formed as well as played.
