I personally believe that Langer’s theory is best. I liked her statement that music symbolizes or imitates each person’s own emotional life – an illusion. I believe that each person has his own personal experiences and each person has his/her own individual emotions. When one hears music, the sounds imitate and symbolize the person’s own personal, emotional life and experiences. A happy Disney song may make one person happy while another may become sad due to a bad experience when they originally heard the song.
I don’t understand why Higgins believes Langer is too vague when it comes to musical symbols and the emotions they stand for. I think Langer is vague because the musical symbols, when they are performed, create different reactions and emotions in each person.
